Have You Heard of White Nose Syndrome?

White nose syndrome is a poorly understood malady associated with the deaths of more than a million bats. The condition, named for a distinctive ring of fungal growth around the muzzles and on the wings of many affected animals, was first identified in a cave in New York in February 2006. It spread to other New York caves and into Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut in 2008. In early 2009 it was confirmed in New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and in March 2010 in Ontario, Canada, and northern Tennessee.

Alan Hicks with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has described the impact as "unprecedented" and "the gravest threat to bats ... ever seen." The mortality rate in some caves has exceeded 90 percent. At greatest risk is the endangered Indiana bat, whose primary hibernaculum in New York has been affected. Deaths of eastern pipistrelles, northern long-eared myotis and little brown bats have also been attributed to the condition. The long-term impact of the reduction in bat populations may be an increase in insects, possibly even leading to crop damage or other economic impact in New England. As of May 2009, bat colonies have been decimated in at least seven states, with an estimated half a million bats having died from the disease.

The name derives from Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of Ulysses. Thursday, 16 June 1904 was the date of Joyce's first outing with his wife-to-be, Nora Barnacle, when they walked to the Dublin urban village of Ringsend.

The Pigeon Wing presents 2009 Retrospective as an open discourse investigating differences and similarities between the project space and the gallery. Within a literal reincarnation of shows held at The Pigeon Wing in 2009, agency presents a new platform for the artists involved to re-visit their motives and re-enact their works, to fit within the walls of The Agency. Artists will include Joanne Smithers, Tim Adams, Alastair T. Willey, Amy Hye Jung Shin, Gareth Lloyd, Frederick Fuller, Harriet Piper, Isobel Shirley, Katy Keefe, Nikos Mantzios, Theo Turpin, Xavier Jimenez, Scott Cowan, Matthew Verdon, JL Murtaugh, Paul Cowan, Annabel Tilley, Francesca Ricci and Jack Bishop.

Following an interest in the action of showing an exhibition within an exhibition and the self-reflective nature of this situation, The Pigeon Wing will work continually within the durational period of the show. The Pigeon Wing hosts an annual series of exhibitions, curated by both invited and house curators. How many Chicagoans know what their alderman looks like? How many Chicagoans can tell you who their alderman is, and what he or she has been doing lately? We’re not pollsters, so we don’t have any hard data to provide answers to these questions — but we are artists, and we’re interested in using art as a vehicle in depicting and learning more about the aldermen who represent us at City Hall. To this end, we invite other Chicago artists to join us in producing 50 ALDERMEN/50 ARTISTS: A group exhibition of portraits that will enable people to learn more about the 50 aldermen who make up the Chicago City Council, and raise awareness of local government. A tsunami (津波) is a series of water waves (called a tsunami wave train) caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, such as an ocean. The original Japanese term literally translates as "harbor wave." Tsunamis are a frequent occurrence in Japan; approximately 195 events have been recorded. Due to the immense volumes of water and energy involved, tsunamis can devastate coastal regions. Casualties can be high because the waves move faster than humans can run. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions (detonations of nuclear devices at sea), landslides and other mass movements, bolide impacts, and other disturbances above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami

Rogue waves (also known as freak waves, monster waves, killer waves, and extreme waves) are relatively large and spontaneous ocean surface waves that are a threat even to large ships and ocean liners. In oceanography, they are more precisely defined as waves whose height is more than twice the significant wave height, which is itself defined as the mean of the largest third of waves in a wave record. Therefore rogue waves are not necessarily the biggest waves found at sea; they are, rather, surprisingly large waves for a given sea state. "Rogue waves are not tsunamis, which are set in motion by earthquakes [and] travel at high speed, building up as they approach the shore. Rogue waves seem to occur in deep water or where a number of physical factors such as strong winds and fast currents converge. This may have a focusing effect, which can cause a number of waves to join together.

A hundred-year wave is a statistically projected water wave, the height of which, on average, is met or exceeded once in a hundred years for a given location. The likelihood of this wave height being attained at least once in the hundred-year period is 63%. As a projection of the most extreme wave which can be expected to occur in a given body of water, the hundred-year wave is a factor commonly taken into consideration by designers of oil platforms and other offshore structures. Periods of time other than a hundred years may also be taken into account, resulting in, for instance, a fifty-year wave.

Holi, also called the Festival of Colours, is a popular Hindu spring festival observed in India, Nepal, Srilanka, and countries with large Hindu diaspora populations. The main day, Holi, also known as Dhulheti, Dhulandi or Dhulendi, is celebrated by people throwing colored powder and colored water at each other. Bonfires are lit the day before, also known as Holika Dahan (burning of Holika) or Chhoti Holi (little Holi). The bonfires are lit in memory of the miraculous escape that young Prahlad accomplished when Demoness Holika, sister of Hiranyakashipu, carried him into the fire. Holika was burnt but Prahlad, a staunch devotee of god Vishnu, escaped without any injuries due to his unshakable devotion. Holika Dahan is referred to as Kama Dahanam in Andhra Pradesh.Holi is celebrated at the end of the winter season on the last full moon day of the lunar month Phalguna (February/March), (Phalgun Purnima), which usually falls in the later part of February or March. In 2009, Holi (Dhulandi) was on March 11 and Holika Dahan was on March 10.

“Love & Heartbreak: new works by Katy Keefe and Samuel Payne” opens at The Metro Gallery on 14 January 2010 and runs though 27 February 2010. Intensely personal and layered with texture, Keefe’s paintings, drawings and photographs are inspired by the romantic, as an answer to Payne’s heart-wrenching, violent paintings and works-on-paper inspired by heartbreak and scorn. Despite the immediate contradictory nature of the two perspectives, the works are thematically united under the auspices of passion, devotion and enlightenment. Using totems and hero worship, Keefe glorifies while Payne simultaneously destroys. The dense works of the two artists are aesthetically complex compositions constructed meticulously of accumulating detail and narratives. The work is both genuinely personal and universally metaphorical. Keefe and Payne utilize their joint belief in the constant presence of separation and division to establish a dialogue regarding heaven and hell, the dichotomy of brokenness, and the question of power and rule in daily life. “Love & Heartbreak” is an exhibition of journeys, failures, enlightenment, and common experience.

This exhibition is a test of foundations. In You Can Build a House the audience is guided to a point of introspection. As people we must be honest about why we promote that which is being advocated through the way we live our lives. Until this rudimentary obstacle is confronted there is hardly any room for complex considerations. Where post-modern thought takes us is into a place where truth and meaning are gone. When something is eliminated, though, something must be posited into its place. For this exhibition we will examine the inadequacy of redefinition and shed light onto an absolute that is found within a non-absolute world view.

Assuming the roles of object, gesture and metaphor, the works manifest their duties. Serving as a stand-in or a prop, they are here as devices to fulfil expected presentational norms. Being objective in nature and subjective in process they are concerned with aesthetic joy. Since the works of art are both a means and an end, investigation should be in the intent. The true end remains open to allow possibility for acceptance and change. What is being denied when something is being affirmed?

The works are attempts at both the ends and the means of this thought. By working under the assumption that these art pieces are insignificant, they can be seen as trials. The testing of ideas, the different modes of working and the sought conclusions of a process are in question. Though they appear to reflect a philosophy, does the ultimate foundation confirm this fact? New ideas may cause one to believe that genuine hope is unattainable, but on what deeper level have these ideas moulded any part of the Truth? You can build a house made with doorways to nowhere, stairways that lead to nothingness and windows that open to walls; only when the structure of the foundation is tampered with will you lose trust in the house. Otherwise, thinking is thinking.

"Eyes to the Unknown" is a series of paintings and drawings of profound optimism and regeneration. The work in this exhibition addresses themes of love and enlightenment using individuals as the vehicles for expression. These are serious investigations of the human as subject and all those elements that make up the personality of the subject construct the imagery surrounding. Bodies intertwine, overgrowth of flora envelop the canvas, and geometric configurations warp light in and out of the landscapes depicted. What is conveyed is the deep soul of a thing. My work is very personal in nature, constructed in a way that reads like a visual diary; for this exhibition the viewer is opened to the world often hid behind and underneath my previous artworks.

i went to all the chelsea galleries today and this chick petah coyne definetly had the best stuff. this massive installation of goth darks and colonial bright whites, dripping with wax and velvet and flowers and taxidermy. was the only thing really worth seeing.

i went to the museum of holography in chicago this weekend

it all has something do with wave reconfiguration and atoms and every single living species nurtured by light and energy and the waves within us allow us to process the holograms in front of us and now im not sure if we or fish or elephants or holograms are anything seperate from each other.

it is homecoming week in wisconsin. i took these pictures the other night and my dad came with me for some reason and after we had a beer at the bar.
